ROOM REVIEW - LADBROKES POKER |
 |
Ladbrokes
Poker has grown exceptionally quick since launching in
May 2002, but slowed down lately as the software is sub standard
and competition has increased for the European players. The
mother company Ladbrokes is a leading sports book, with a
strong Internet presence. The site boast arond fifth highest
traffic in the ring games, with peak levels in the evening
time in Europe. The site has some real nice features and others
that are dreadful. We should mention right away that US citizens
are not allowed to play! So, the site has some great advantages.
Great high-limit tables, in particular in the pot- and no-limit
games where Ladbrokes really stands out, as its European clientele
is much more likely to play pot- and no-limit. There are many
very juicy and aggressive games, which is good both for the
action lover and the advanced players looking for a good hourly
return. The view flop percentage at full hold'em tables is
typically in the 40-ies and 50-ies, with some tables reaching
up to the 70-ies. The ability to cash out instantly to your
credit card is also very useful. On the downside there is quite
a bit too! The software (stand alone version of Prima Poker
Network by Microgaming) just does not cut it. Its usability
is limited, graphics are sub standard and the stability is
often not good. The support has been quite bad, but seems
to be picking up. Still, Ladbrokes has become the number one
choice of many Europeans with their heavy and juicy hold'em
action.

POKER - INTERFACE |
| Ladbrokes
Poker software is the only big let down at Ladbrokes Poker
(beside the unavailability to US players). The software is a
stand-alone version of Prima Poker Network by Microgaming. There
was a makeover in the summer of 2003, but most of the problems
still persist. Ladbrokes does not share the player base with
the rest of the network (whereas most of the network share the
player database to ensure high traffic). The software still
have some bugs, where the functionality does not work properly,
such as sitting out involuntarily, not being able to raise exactly
the desired amount, etc. The newly added statistics function
does not seem to work, as it does not count most or all of the
hands the player does not play. Hence, you will get a view flop
percentage of maybe 75% instead of a correct 30%. The game is
one of the slowest in the industry, as the time restriction
is very loose. The effect has been that many players choose
to play on 3-4 tables, further slowing down the game. The graphics
are not appealing. Hand history is available by HTML page and
via email. One nice feature is the possibility to see all actions
in the chat area to the right - who raised and called and for
which amounts in the previous betting rounds and previous hands.
In sum, the software is clearly sub standard for a leading poker
room. |

LADBROKES
POKER - PLAYER TABLES |
The
player tables are simple but very clear with nice large cards
that don't need a magnifying glass to see. Large chat and
play log to the right so you won't miss any chat and it is
easy to check on hands. Nice table, shame that they haven't
made player avatars available as they seem to add interesting
chat to the game. Their player volumes, however, is not increasing
at the same rate as some of the other leading poker rooms.
This means that only during peak time are you guaranteed to
get some variety and choice of tables. |

POKER - RING GAMES |
Ladbrokes
ring game traffic is very high considering the US player ban.
Currently, it is the site with the most European players at
most times of the day. The ring game traffic at peak times
over 2,000 players (2005). It is still far behind other poker
rooms/networks in terms of player volumes, but considering
it is a standalone player base, it is one of the highest for
an individual poker room. A lot of high stake action and primarily
European based players. |

POKER - TOURNAMENTS |
Ladbrokes
Poker's tournament traffic continue to rise at a fast
pace. At peak times, often over 2-3,000 tournament players
logged on. This in turn has led to far greater variety of
tournaments with regularly scheduled guaranteed events. What
sets Ladbrokes Poker apart from many other poker rooms is
that they hold regular tournaments for a number of the poker
variants such as Omaha and 7 Card Stud. Ladbrokes also hold
a number of large events such as the Ladbrokes European Poker
Championship where the 2005 winner picked up a winner's cheque
for $1 million. |

Cryptologic is getting far
greater player volumes which makes William Hill Poker
a far more interesting poker room than before. With its
£25 rakeback for frequent players, William Hill
Poker makes a lot of sense. A lot of loose action and
plenty of high stake games at both limit and no limit. |
