THE START OF THE GAME

Play starts with each player adding an equal bet to the pot. This is called the ANTE and ensures that the round will have at least some kind of stakes to play for. After this the dealer dishes out the cards to the players. The cards are dealt face down in a clockwise direction with the dealer taking the last card. The Dealer then places the deck on the table and play starts by each card player picking up his or her cards and seeing what kind of card hand the games given them.

The first player to the left of the dealer at the start of a game of Poker will generally get things moving by placing the first bet or checking (passing to the next player without placing a bet). Play then continues in a clockwise direction.

PLAY OPTIONS
Each player has the following options during the game:

CHECKING
Checking involves passing to the next player at the beginning of a game without placing a bet. This can only be done before an opening bet has been placed.

OPENING
Opening the betting. The first player to place a bet opens the betting.

CALL
This means simply matching the current round of betting. You need to do this to stay in the card game.

RAISE
After a player has made a bet, the next player can raise the bet according to the game's betting rules. If there is a reraise on the initial bet, another player after the reraiser can raise again. The norm is that there can be a total of 3 raises during a bettering round. This is done after matching (seeing) the current bet. As an example someone would say 'I see you 10 cents and raise you another 5 cents'.

FOLD
Finally to fold means to cut your losses on a round and give up. If you have a terrible hand and decide not to bluff it out by calling the current bet then you might decide to do this.

THE DRAW
Once each player has had his or her turn then the draw part of game takes place. This involves each player having the opportunity to get rid of up to three cards and take a similar number from the deck. None of the cards are made visible to any other players in this card swaping process.

After this drawing phase of the game, play continues clockwise as before with another round of betting. The end of the round is reached when either everyone has folded except the lucky winner or no further raises are made. The game is now called (the Showdown) and each card player shows his hand so the winner can be decided.
